The Roman republic later to become the Roman Empire started as an urban prosperous center called Rome, which was originally ruled by the Etruscans and later by Latin population, which in alliance with the indigenous population overthrew the Etruscans and founded the Republic in 509 B.C.E. The expansion originally was under the republic. Many city-states in the Italian peninsula were put under the Roman rule over a period of two centuries. For a brief moment during 390 B.C.E. the Celts went southern Po River and then sacked Rome. However, Rome recovered and many successful campaigns brought the rest of the peninsula on the other side of Po under Roman control.

The second expansion was westward. Carthage was a main power in the Mediterranean, and Rome entered into the so-called Punic Wars, three to be exact, which went on from 264 until B.C.E. 146 and ended with Rome defeating the Carthaginians and taking control over Sicily, Sardinia, Spain, Corsica and Tunisia (Numidia).  The eastern expansion on the other hand started as a campaign to guard the city-states of Greek from the territorial advances. First Asia Minor and Greece were made protectorates, and only later in 133 were they put under complete Roman dominance.

Rome remained a republic until Caesar’s rule. He was a member of an aristocratic Roman family, who worked his way into becoming the first Roman ruler. He was originally appointed Governor of Spain, but he directed a lot of military campaigns pursuing Gaul, up to the British Isles. He put the territories of modern France and Belgium under Roman rule. The Roman Empire came into being during Augustus, who became its first emperor. His armies expanded the empire to include all Northern Africa in the south, up to the Red Sea and the Black Sea in the East, and northward up to the Rhine and the Danube. This is how the first Roman Empire expanded, a trend which continued for many more centuries.

How to do online research

Today it is very important to learn how to do online research. Whether you are a student who needs to write a paper, or a person who needs to know more about a particular topic, online research skills are crucial. You need to know what you are looking for and how to look for it. Online research is even more of a challenge for someone in the developing world who does not have access to the most updated academic publications. Yet, there are some free online resources you could consult.

If you are a student writing a paper, you probably are given a topic. Use the key words to that topic to find out more about it. However, make sure you are looking into some authoritative sites, rather than some obscure blogs. Papers need references, and citing the link might not be enough to find evidence to support your arguments or to explain you position. Official websites are usually acceptable. At least you know that what is posted there is endorsed by the state institution or the organization that owns the site. Furthermore, Google books or other similar sites (such as university ones) have a lot of books or articles that are considered respectable within the academic community. Sometimes they go as far as provide you with links to books that have become public domain (i.e. copyright has expired). Likewise publishing houses also have websites in which they for advertising purposes upload chapters of books or allow certain articles to be online for free.

Going to these websites and searching with key words will save you a lot of time. Make sure to enter the correct key words, which might be your topic, the name of the place you are researching and perhaps the year or period you are interested in, so that you find the most suitable source for your research.
